Frequently Asked Questions
FAQS
-
Do you buy books?
We do, depending on what books it is. We buy anything from rare and antiquarian books, signed and first editions, general secondhand titles and ephemera, maps and zines. Visit the Sell Your Books page for more information or contact us!
-
How will Manchester Rare Books pay me if I sell them books?
We pay by bank transfer or cheque whichever is preferred. We can also pay cash for lower value items.
-
Where are you based? Can I come visit ?
Manchester Rare Books is currently based in Didsbury, Manchester. At this stage there isn’t an open shop, but do keep an eye out. Get in touch if you have books to sell or would like to see our stock in person and we would be more than happy to arrange something.
-
How do I tell if my book is a first edition?
For modern books, a number line on the copyright page with the number ‘1’ is usually enough to identify, however, each publisher has their own way of signifying this. There are also quirks and other exceptions. For Antiquarian Books, there are more factors to consider.
The best thing to do if unsure is to send us an email or WhatsApp with photos. We love looking at books so please get in touch!
-
How do I know your offer and prices are fair?
The Rare Book trade is unique in that it operates on reputation and trust. As members of the PBFA we are bound to the highest guidelines of conduct. We are in this business due to a love of books and the people who collect them.
-
Do you do house clearances?
We will tackle any job, big or small, to suit your needs. In the event that your books are not of any commercial value, we will happily work out an arrangement. We work with charities on a regular basis to donate the books so more people can enjoy them.
-
Do you Value Books?
Yes — we offer free, no-obligation valuations and appraisals for single books, collections, and complete libraries. Whether you’re unsure if a book is valuable, want to understand its market worth, or are thinking about selling, we’re always happy to help. Our specialists assess books based on factors like edition, printing, condition, dust jacket, provenance, and current market demand. We regularly value everything from modern first editions and signed copies to rare antiquarian works, Folio Society editions, ephemera, science fiction, and detective fiction. If you’d like a valuation, simply send us a list or photographs by email, or arrange a visit, and we’ll provide an honest, expert assessment — completely free of charge
-
Do you buy Harry Potters?
Currently we are only interested in first editions of Philsophers’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban. We are also interested in the Deluxe Editions of all titles. Later titles and impressions signed however are still of interest so feel free to contact us.
-
Do you only buy books in Manchester, or do you travel across the UK?
While Manchester Rare Books is based in the heart of Manchester, we regularly travel throughout Greater Manchester, the North West, and across the UK to appraise and purchase rare books and collections. Whether you’re nearby or further afield, we’re happy to arrange a visit to inspect your books and make an offer. Location is never a barrier — we buy books from sellers all over the country.
What We buy
Folio Society, Fine Press & Limited Edition
We actively buy Folio Society sets, fine press books, deluxe slipcased editions, and numbered limited printings — whether individual volumes or complete series.
Counterculture, Radical & Underground Material
We actively buy books, magazines, pamphlets, zines, posters, and ephemera relating to the counterculture — from the Beat Generation and 1960s underground press to radical politics, protest movements, music subcultures, and avant-garde art scenes.
First Editions & Modern Literature
From Agatha Christie and Ian Fleming to J.R.R. Tolkien and Georges Simenon, we buy landmark works of fiction and non-fiction — especially true first printings, scarce dust-jacketed copies, and collectible modern literature.
Antiquarian Books & Early Printings
From 16th–19th century works and fine leather bindings to early typographic landmarks, we are always interested in rare and significant antiquarian books — including classic literature by authors such as Jane Austen, and important works on polar exploration, travel, and discovery.
Signed, Inscribed & Association Copies
Books signed or inscribed by their authors, association copies with notable provenance, and presentation editions — these are often among the most sought-after and valuable items we buy.
Maps, Manuscripts, Ephemera & Original Material
Beyond books, we also purchase historical maps, manuscripts, diaries, letters, archival material, original artwork, and other unique printed or handwritten items.
